Bhubaneswar: The development authority is planning to set up 21 new amusement parks in the city and nearby areas.
Officials of Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA) said most of these parks would come up in areas where the residents had asked for one.
Some of them would come up on government land belonging to the BDA and has been recently cleared of encroachment. These parks would come up in Saheed Nagar, Nayapalli, Kalinga Nagar, Chandrasekharpur, Niladri Vihar and other areas in the city.
Chief horticulturist Ashok N. Dhar said the parks would come up in the central part of the city as well as in the peripheral areas. Among those proposed, most of are standard ones spread over area of around one to five acres. However, the park at K-8 in Kalinga Nagar is supposed to be the largest among the lot that will be spread over an area of 12 acres.
"The BDA wants to set up 21 parks in the current financial year. We will spend from our own fund to build them. Most of them are in conceptual phase with the land designing in final stage. But we have already started work on around six parks at different places and over Rs 1 crore has been sanctioned for six parks," said Dhar. The development authority plans to inaugurate them on BDA day on September 1, said an officer.
The BDA also plans to employ its staff to take care of the parks.
After the construction is complete, the number of parks developed and maintained by the development authority will rise to 81.
At present, BDA maintains 60 parks at different places in the city that include Guru Kelucharan park at Gadhakan, Biju Patnaik park at Unit-VI, IG park at Unit-II, Madhusudan park at Pokhariput, Shyama Prasad Mukherjee park at Satsang Vihar and several others. The authority spends around Rs 1 crore every year to maintain them.
There are around 150 staff to take care of the existing parks, which are guarded by 60 security personnel.
The residents have welcomed the steps taken by the development authority.
"This is a welcome step that the free space in our area will be utilised for a park. We will get a place to hang out," said Parsuram Mohanty, a resident of N-5, Nayapalli, where a new park will come up.
