Sensex gains 156 points on F&O expiry, positive global cues

MUMBAI: The benchmark BSE sensex rose over 156 points in early trade on Thursday as participants indulged in covering their short positions in view of the monthly expiry in the derivatives segment amid positive global cues.

The 30-share barometer, which had gained 104.20 points in the previous session, rose further 156.72 points, or 0.56%, to 27,720.15. 

Besides, value-buying in capital goods, healthcare, realty, PSUs, auto and banking stocks positively impacted trading sentiment. 

Also, the NSE Nifty regained the 8,400-mark by surging 46.60 points, or 0.55%, to 8,421.65. 

Brokers said that apart from the short covering as today being the last trading session of July expiry in the derivatives space, a firming trend at other Asian bourses supported the uptrend. 

Among other Asian markets, Hong Kong's Hang Seng firmed up 0.22% while Japan's Nikkei higher by 1.36% in early trade today. 

The US Dow Jones Industrial Average ended 0.69% higher in yesterday's trade after the Federal Reserve upgraded its outlook on the economy, buoyed sentiment.

Sensex extends gains, up 123 points in early trade

MUMBAI: The benchmark BSE sensex gained over 123 points in early trade today on sustained foreign funds inflows and across-the-board buying by investors, tracking positive Asian cues. 

The 30-share barometer rose 123.17 points, or 0.44 per cent to 28,321.46. The gauge had gained 265.39 points in the previous session. 

Axis Bank, Tata Steel, Bajaj Auto, HDFC Ltd, Sun Pharma, Coal India, Infosys, ICICI Bank, Wipro, ONGC, ITC Ltd, Tata Motors and Dr Reddy were major gainers that supported the index rally. The NSE nifty too gained 38.85 points or 0.45 per cent to trade at 8,562.65. 

Brokers said continued buying by foreign funds and retail investors, tracking a firming trend at other Asian markets after the Greece's parliament approved the austerity plan buoyed trading sentiments. 

Besides, the country's trade deficit narrowing to USD 10.8 billion in June as against USD 11.7 billion in same month last year, influenced sentiment, they said. 

Among other Asian markets, Japan's Nikkei was up by 0.55 per cent while Hong Kong's Hang Seng rose 0.12 per cent in early trade today. 

The US Dow Jones Industrial Average, however, ended 0.02 per cent lower in yesterday.

Sensex tumbles 117 pts despite positive IIP data

MUMBAI: The benchmark BSE sensex fell over 117 points in early trade today on continued capital outflows by foreign funds and selling by investors despite improved IIP numbers and steady inflation data.

A weak trend at other Asian markets after negotiations between Greece and its creditors broke down dampened sentiment. 

The 30-share barometer, which had gained 54.32 points in the previous session on Friday, was trading down 117.46 points, or 0.44 per cent, at 26,307.84 with IT, technology, consumer durables, power, banking, PSU and metal sectors leadingOn similar lines, the NSE nifty shed 38.05 points, or 0.47 per cent, at 7,944.85. 

Brokers said sentiment remained weak even as positive IIP data -- industrial production grew at a 2-month high of 4.1 per cent in April -- failed to trigger buying. 

Meanwhile, retail inflation edged up to 5.01 per cent in May as against 4.87 per cent in April. The Consumer Price Index stood at 8.33 per cent in May 2014. 

Shares of Cairn India today rose 0.50 per cent to Rs 181.65 after the announcement of merger between metal and mining company Vedanta and the oil firm in a USD 2.3 billion all-share deal to create India's largest diversified natural resources play. 

Vedanta Ltd was also trading 0.92 per cent higher at Rs 185.70. 

Among other Asian markets, Hong Kong's Hang Seng was down 0.68 per cent while Japan's Nikkei slipped 0.99 per cent in early trade. 

The US Dow Jones Industrial Average ended 0.78 per cent lower in Friday's trade.

Sensex up 51 points in early trade on positive data

MUMBAI: The benchmark BSE sensex rose over 51 points to 27,880.15 in early trade on Monday on the back of increased buying by funds and investors helped by positive growth data for the March quarter.

The 30-share index, which had gained 321,73 points in the previous session at the beginning of the June series in the derivatives segment, gained 51.71 points, or 0.18%, to trade at 27,880.15. 

Stocks of realty, banking, IT, metal, PSU and power led the gains. 
The NSE Nifty was trading higher by 15.40 points, or 0.18%, at 8,449.05. 

Sentiment turned better as buying activity gathered momentum after India's economy grew 7.5% in the last quarter of 2014-15, brokers said. 

Besides, expectations of a rate cut by the Reserve Bank of India at its policy meet tomorrow triggered the flow, they said. 

However, caution prevailed on disappointing company earnings and a weak trend at other Asian markets. 

Among other Asian markets, Hong Kong's Hang Seng shed 0.19% while Japan's Nikkei shed 0.58% in early trade today. 

The US Dow Jones Industrial Average ended 0.64% down in Friday's trade as data showed the economy contracted in the first quarter.
